The word “nonsense” originated from the group of nonsense poets who have repeatedly made waves in contemporary Chinese poetry. In Zhang’s gloomy debut feature documentary, “The Man Who Talks Nonsense”, depicts the everyday way of life of three “Beijing children”: they are literary, marginal, self-deprecating, lazy but idealistic. They talk all day long about abstract “nonsense” that has little to do with the imminent reality, topics that outsiders seem to be imaginative and lack practical utility. For them, this is almost the only way to show their self-worth to the outside world.
