Daniel, 14 years old, moved to São Teotónio from Wenzhou two years ago. As the only Chinese child in the area, he has never fully integrated into local life, caught between Portuguese and Chinese cultures without a sense of belonging. The absence of his parents during his childhood deepened the emotional distance between them. He found solace in gaming, connecting with friends in the virtual world who seemed to understand him better. To Daniel, São Teotónio feels like an isolated island, and his story mirrors the struggles of many Chinese expatriates during and after the COVID-19.

In Portugal, there is a type of Chinese retail store known as the “300 Shop.” Even in the most remote towns, you can find Zhejiang merchants running these small family-owned businesses. The name “300 Shop” comes from the era before Portugal adopted the euro, when 300 of the former national currency, Escudo, was worth less than 2 euros. Due to the demanding nature of their work, which requires long shifts and constant store supervision, shop owners often send their young children back to their hometowns in Zhejiang to be cared for by grandparents. The children return to Europe to live with their parents only when they reach middle school age. However, the challenges these children face in adapting to new cultural and family environments are often overlooked, especially when they are likely the only Chinese child in the area. Daniel is one such child, and his situation became even more difficult during the pandemic.
